I have a site where i use graphics for the first 7 links then text links afterwards. I’m aware that these graphic links can’t be read by spiders but how important is it? I’m trying to get onto page 1 of google, im on page 1 of all other engines but am stuck on page 2 of google and think this might be why.
You need text links from reliable websites to increase your rank.

Graphic links can be read – the html code (if you view source code) is quite clear for them to read.

Links can be followed by search engines (just avoid using javascript links). Use alt text for the images, that will act the same as keywords.
You need to learn about Search Engine Optimization. There are a number of factors that influence search engine ranking. These articles will get you started:

Links are formed by anything you put between <a></a> tags. If you use images then the spiders have no idea of what you mean by that link.
So put a Title to that link by using "title" parameter:
<a href="http://…" title="This is something!"><img src=".." alt="This image is about blablabla"></a>
Also don’t forget to put the "alt" which specifies what should be there in case the image doesn’t download.
Spiders read the "alt" as well as the "title".

The text links are VERY IMPORTANT. I used link picture before because they looked nicer on the website, but it affected my website’s ranking.
At the recommendation of a friend, I’ve started working with CRT Business Solutions ( http://www.crtbs.com ) , an SEO company from South of California, and they advised me to replace the pictures with text link and, eventually, add a picture behind the text or next to it thru CSS file, which I did. Even if the Page Ranking (PR) of my website didn’t change yet, I see every day that my pages are on a higher search results on Google, Yahoo and MSN. I am saying “my pages”, because every page is optimized for certain keywords.
Besides changing the image links with text links, they optimized every page for search engine: unique title, url, meta descriptions for each one of them, content tagged with <h1> <h2><h3> or <b>, etc.
These are just few tricks they shared with me while they worked on my website. I’m sure there is more than that. Feel free to contact them. I really recommend their service.
P.S. I’ve gave another answer here that you might find helpfull:
