Any free backlinks won’t be viewed highly by Googlebots. Most often, these links come from garbage sites and, webwise, you’re known by the company you keep.
If you want to start building back links that count:
1. Syndicate content through ezine.com, helium.com, goarticles.com, etc. Each time an article is picked up by another site you get a quality, non-recipricol inbound link.
2. Post to blogs within your sphere of activity. Google "on-line directories" to find blogs, or just start hanging out where other professionals do. Bookmark good sites and post often.
3. Answer questions on blogs. Some blogs are closed, others open wherein you can leave a comment. Leave insightful comments and sign every answer with your name AND your URL. This delivers site visitors and builds links with quality, topic-related sites. It’s also a great trust builder.
4. Finally, add features to increase site stickiness. There’s not much "to do" on the site now so add some real-time information to provide visitors with a reson to return to the site over and over.
If writing isn’t your thing, post the project on Elance. You should be able to get decent quality writing for $10-$15 a page. Also, re-purpose content on site, syndication, etc. to get the max for your buck.
