Before you get started, you should read http://www.gooruze.com/articles/165/Not-All-Backlinks-Are-Created-Equal/ – as not all back links are as good as each other/created equal.

A good start would be to include your link in your signature in forums you post in. If you visit blogs (preferably to do with your site – e.g. if your site is on basketball then visit other basketball fan websites) and when you leave a comment, put your website in the URL section.

That always takes some time. Build up your site first, and then contact people who have similar websites and ask them to do link exchanges. Just keep working at it. If you have quality information people are more likely to link to you. Use digg.com. But don’t do that until you’ve established the website fairly well.
